Description:
Old school architecture that can teach us so much about the past. My first impressions of Colonica La Penna take me back to what I can only imagine times would have been like. The beautiful arches of the this building are what really draw me. From the ground floor up to the first level, these arches form the entrance way and focal point of the property.
Currently unrestored but actually in very good structural condition, this 470 sqm property conserves beam work, barrel vaulted ceilings and the original stone fireplace. The floors are still in old handmade terracotta. The external staircase is in the traditional pietra serena
and lead up to a covered portico. Again, all of these are features of this particular style of property and I can only appreciate the care in which it has been maintained over the years.
I notice that there is a small internal staircase that leads to the dove tower. Feeling a bit adventurous, I make my way up to the top where I find the main room and an extension to the right of the tower. Additions and modifications to the original layout were almost always due to ever growing families and the need for more space. This extension will most likely be added to another part of the house during the restoration, to uncover the tower as it once would have been.
Back down stairs and outside, I make my way around the property where I find annexes attached to the main house along with the very typical bread oven. Definitely a feature worth conserving. The hay barn, located just across the main home, is the perfect size for a guest cottage and will also need restoration. The other annexes are all volume that can be incorporated into the overall project.
The land surrounding the property is of circa 4000 sqm and is the immediate front garden that also runs all around to the back of the home. There is room for a swimming pool and of course, outdoor eating areas. The ambiance around this particular property is one of exclusivity and privacy as the home is nestled and not in an over exposed or dominating position.
The local village of Penna can be seen from the property and is positioned on a hilltop, boasting medieval architecture and an excellent restaurant. The closest café/bar is within walking distance from the property in the more modern base town of Penna. Terranuova Bracciolini is only 5 minutes away and here I find all of the basic amenities. Let's not forget, however, that in about 40 minutes I can get to Florence for art, culture and shopping!
My Thoughts: This property is a project for someone who really appreciates the architecture that has been handed down. It is in very good condition although in need of a restoration, therefore the majority of work will be in configuring the perfect home. If you are looking for expansive views and a dominating position, this is not for you. Colonica La Penna has a gentler position with a nestled feeling about it... almost monastery like. Hidden and private but full of history and potential. Ask us for restoration details.
