The territory of Villafranca in Lunigiana is located in the western part of the Magra valley in the province of Massa Carrara and it has a population of about 4,500 inhabitants.
The remains of the castle called Malfido, at the entrance of the village of Villafranca, witnesses its glorious past, when the government of the Malaspina family was one of the most important centre in the area around Val di Magra. The Castle controlled the confluence of the river Magra and the stream Bagnone, and the traffic along the Via Francigena. There are only ruins left of this imposing fortress as it was destroyed by the bombs during WWII. However, Villafranca is still one of the most beautiful towns of Lunigiana.
